Performing and Expressive Arts at St Bede’s is a growing area which has flourished in recent years. Music and Drama are taught to all students for at least 2 years in years 7, 8 & 9.
We offer Key Stage 4 students in years 10 and 11 the choice between BTEC Performing Arts, GCSE Drama or GCSE Music.
At key stage 5, A Level Dance, Music and Theatre Studies are currently offered as part of the St Benedict’s Catholic Sixth Form.
All staff in the department are trained to deliver Arts Award to students who wish to achieve an extra qualification.
We strive to create an environment in which our students can enjoy the Arts – but work in the Arts requires respect, discipline and strong commitment if a productive and fulfilling time is to be had by all therefore, high levels of discipline are essential throughout the department and will be insisted upon.
We are proud of our facilities in the Performing Arts. St Bede’s has a newly refurbished drama room and a brand new Brass suite for whole class tuition in brass instruments. Future plans for expansion and developments will only serve to enhance the ‘buzz’ we aim to give students in the subject area.
The department are committed to providing students with a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities. There are a good and increasing choice of activities for anyone interested in the Arts with many more exciting opportunities to come over the next few months.
We aim to provide an opportunity for students to perform to an audience at least once a term. Recent events have included a Winter Concert, Battle of the Bands, X Factor and the school production.
In March 2011 the team presented an outstanding performance of ‘Peter Pan the Musical’ as a joint whole school production from which Mr Ackroyd, Head of Music, was awarded with a prize for Best Musical Director in the Wharfedale Festival of Theatre. We now have the performing rights to present ‘Hairspray’ in 2012.
